The warm weather is finally upon us after a long and harsh Winter. While we are all eager to get outside and enjoy the sunshine, there's something important to keep in mind when it comes to our senior citizens. Did you know that over 1,500 people in the U.S. die each year from excessive heat? Those who cannot adjust as easily to temperature changes, like seniors, are at risk of things like exhaustion and heat stroke. That's why it's important to take precautions, such as keeping water easily accessible around the house and in the car, as well as ensuring that heavier clothing is put away for the season and replaced with lighter, more appropriate clothing.
During the high-heat times of the day, between 2pm-5pm, opt for a nap or leisurely activity indoors and in an air-conditioned space. Afternoon coffee can be switched out for iced-tea. Daily chores can be saved for the morning or evening hours, when it is cooler. Of course, it's important to stay hydrated, even if you don't feel thirsty in the moment. For many seniors, going out into the heat and enjoying the day can be a daunting task. It's easier to just stay inside and avoid it all; however, that can lead to isolation and depression. Instead, enlisting the assistance of companionship services – like those from ACC Adult Home Care – can help ensure safety and security in the heat while enjoying the day. Our Caregivers can help with transportation, mobility, and ensuring hydration during the outdoor excursion. If you or a loved one would like to make the most of the warm weather, give Melva from ACC Adult Home Care a call at 440.320.3335. She can help guide you through the process of determining how your needs can best be met. Comments are closed.
